Thurgood
Marshall was America's leading radical. He led a
civil rights revolution in the 20th century that forever
changed the landscape of American society. But he is the
least well known of the three leading black figures of
this century. Martin Luther King Jr., with his
preachings of love and non-violent resistance, and
Malcolm X, the fiery street preacher who advocated a
bloody overthrow of the system, are both more closely
associate in the popular mind and myth with the civil
rights struggle. But it was Thurgood Marshall, working
through the courts to eradicate the legacy of slavery
and destroying the racist segregation system of Jim
Crow, who had an even more profound and lasting effect
on race relations than either of King or X

Amazing O.J. Closing Argument
A
trial lawyer in Los Angeles, is known for his landmark
victories against official misconduct within the legal
system and for his work with high-profile clients
including Michael Jackson, Reginald Denny, and O.J.
Simpson.
After
receiving his law degree from Loyola University School
of Law in 1962, Mr. Cochran served as Deputy City
Attorney for the City of Los Angeles, assigned to the
Criminal Division from 1963 to 1965. He then founded the
law firm of Cochran, Atkins & Evans, where he
handled both civil and criminal cases.
Mr.
Cochran was named Criminal Trial Lawyer of the Year in
February 1977 by the Los Angeles Criminal Courts Bar
Association and then served as the Assistant District
Attorney for Los Angeles County from 1978-1980, the
first African-American to hold the position. In 1979, he
was instrumental in founding the Los Angeles County
Domestic Violence Council.
In
1981, Mr. Cochran returned to private practice as a
plaintiff's trial lawyer and won a number of landmark
decisions against police misconduct. In 1992, he
received the highest jury award in the history of the
city of Los Angeles in a police misconduct matter on
behalf of a 13-year-old girl molested by an LAPD
officer. Mr. Cochran has also handled several cases for
high-profile clients such as Todd Bridges, Michael
Jackson, former Black Panther Geronimo Pratt, Reginald
Denny, and O.J. Simpson.
Mr.
Cochran is the only attorney ever to be the recipient of
the Trial Lawyer of the Year Award from both the Los
Angeles Trial Lawyers Association and the Criminal
Courts Bar Association. Mr. Cochran is a member of the
prestigious International Academy of Trial Lawyers and
The American College of Trial Lawyers, whose membership
consists of the top one percent of trial attorneys in
the United States. Mr. Cochran was inducted into The
Inner Circle of Advocates, an organization of the
country's top 100 plaintiff lawyers.
WILLIAM
B. GOULD IV is a law professor at Stanford
University Law School and was chairman of the National
Labor Relations Board from 1994 to 1998. A practising
lawyer who has represented the United Automobile Workers
and black plaintiffs in employment discrimination class
actions, his forthcoming book, Labored Relations:
Law, Politics, and the NLRB -- A Memoir, will be
published by MIT Press in 2000.
